dam monitoring

Automation promotes the safety of mining dams

Automatic monitoring of mining dams

In addition to the risk of dam failure and the resulting flood effects, mining dams also pose a risk due to the harmful or hazardous properties of the substances involved.

We deliver suitable monitoring solutions for dam structures, installations, maintenance, reliable results and automatic reporting.

Monitoring solutions for mining dams

Pore pressure

Pore pressure measurements are used in dam monitoring. Increased pore water pressure is a risk to dam stability.

Measuring device: Pore pressure sensor

The typical measuring range of pore pressure sensors is 0-5 bars. Several pore pressure heads can be connected to a measuring point at various levels. Pore pressure sensors (piezometers) are inserted into the ground by using threaded steel tubes that are attached to the sensors. The central processing unit of this device transfers the measurement data automatically to FinMeas Online, which provides easy access to up-to-date measurement data from any device.

Benefits

  • Real-time and precise information about possible changes in pore pressure
  • Measuring sensors detect inside the structure what cannot be seen from the outside
  • The system raises an alarm immediately if the pore water pressure exceeds a permissible value
  • Measurements can be used to support foundation planning
  • Remote monitoring reduces unnecessary costs, delays and the risk of errors

Water level

Measuring devices can be used for monitoring the water level of groundwater, water systems and reservoirs.

The typical measuring range of water pressure sensors is 0-5 bars. Several pressure sensors can be connected to a central processing unit. The central processing unit of this device transfers the measurement data automatically to FinMeas Online, which provides easy access to up-to-date measurement data from any device.

Benefits

  • Real-time and precise information about possible changes in water level
  • More secure and economical than conventional monitoring methods
  • Automatic alarms warn about potential changes
  • Remote monitoring reduces unnecessary costs, delays and the risk of errors
  • Documentation is generated and saved automatically

Displacement

Displacement measurements are used to monitor ground movements. Automatic displacement monitoring of dam structures keeps you up to date on possible changes that may expose stability risks.

Measuring device: Automatic inclinometer

The measuring device is an automatic inclinometer, a flexible tube containing biaxial inclination sensors. Typically, sensors are installed inside the tube at intervals of one metre. The measuring tube is placed vertically in the ground so that it moves and bends according to the movement of the soil layers. The displacement profile is calculated from the data provided by the sensors inside the tube. The central processing unit of this device transfers the measurement data automatically to FinMeas Online, which provides easy access to up-to-date measurement data from any device.

Benefits

  • Real-time and precise information about possible displacements
  • The exact time that changes have taken place can be traced
  • The service can be configured with threshold values, automatically sending an alarm to the mobile phones or emails of responsible persons when triggered
  • Remote monitoring reduces unnecessary costs, delays and the risk of errors
  • Documentation is generated and saved automatically

Settlement

Dam safety can be enhanced by monitoring settlement in order to stay up to date on possible changes that may weaken the safety of the structures.

Measuring device: GPS-based settlement monitoring

The focus of the GPS-based solution is tracking one single point. The accuracy that can be achieved with the solution is +-1cm. We also deliver the necessary base station.

Measuring device: Automatic settlement hose

For measuring settlement, FinMeas delivers measuring devices that contain precise pressure sensors connected to a long fluid hose. The fluid hose measuring device can be hundreds of metres long, and the interval between sensors can be dozens of metres. The measuring device can be installed underground or directly to the structure.

The central processing unit of these devices transfers the measurement data automatically to FinMeas Online, which provides easy access to up-to-date measurement data from any device.

Benefits

  • Real-time and precise information about possible settlements
  • The sensors can detect settlements of as little as 5 mm
  • Settlement hose is ideal for locations where information is gathered from several points
  • The service can be configured with threshold values, automatically sending an alarm to the mobile phones or emails of responsible persons when triggered
  • Remote monitoring reduces unnecessary costs, delays and the risk of errors

Temperature profile

Temperature profile monitoring provides not only frost information but also information about the water moving in the dam. If there is moving seepage water in the dam, there will be noticeable changes in the temperature profile. This helps detect potential leaks that are not visible on the surface.

Measuring device: Temperature profile

The measuring device is either a tube or a cable that is customised according to the customer’s requirements and that contains precise digital temperature sensors. The length of a measuring tube can vary from a couple of dozen centimetres to several metres. Typically, sensors are set inside the tube at intervals of five centimetres. The length of a measuring cable can be hundreds of metres. The central processing unit of this device transfers the measurement data automatically to FinMeas Online, which provides easy access to up-to-date measurement data from any device.

Benefits

  • Digital sensors provide more reliable measurement results than conventional systems
  • The measuring devices only have one cable that needs to be connected, so they are easy to install and transfer
  • A separate sensor and cable are no longer required for each location to be measured, which also resolves problems related to handling thermo pairs
  • FinMeas Online generates easily understandable measurement data visualisations
  • Remote monitoring reduces unnecessary costs, delays and the risk of errors

Camera

Cameras make it possible to monitor the real-time situation at the location. This can become important when combined with different measurements of riverbeds, for example, so you can easily see if the riverbed is frozen or flooded. The camera image is displayed with other measurement data on the FinMeas Online service.

Customers' comments

"In the past, we relied more on manual measurements and recorded the data in Excel by hand. However, with the implementation of FinMeas, we have been able to automate a vast number of instruments in the tailings basins. This has allowed us to perform real-time monitoring and receive alarms if any of the limit values are exceeded. Additionally, the system generates automatic reports on measurement results, further streamlining our monitoring processes."
